The Butler Foundation

The Butler Charity School was founded under the will of Edmund Butler, a non-conformist, in 1717, who left land in trust for educating and providing clothes for poor boys and girls living in Little Baddow and Boreham.

During the nineteenth century the Trust paid for the Little Baddow children to be taught alongside those at the British School, set up by the Congregational chapel. The school building later became the original Memorial Hall.

The first Board of Education scheme for the Butler Educational Foundation was dated 20th October 1909. there were to be nine trustees, two appointed by Essex county Council, two by Boreham Parish Council, two by Little Baddow parish Council and three co-opted.

The Butler Trust has incorporated various changes over the years to reflect the educational needs of young people. In 1985 trustees addressed the changing situation of Further Education. Increasing numbers of young people were going on to university and college. Students were over the age of eighteen, technically adults, and receiving their education away from home. It was agreed that, as long as these students had parents living in Little Baddow and Boreham, they were entitled to apply for grants from the Trust in their own right.

The trustees continue to meet three times during the year and make small educational grants to young people in Little Baddow and Boreham.
