Welcome to the Parish Council Website
for Little Baddow, Essex

Little Baddow is an attractive rural Essex village which lies between Danbury to the south and Hatfield Peverel to the north.  The village is a haven for walkers and is well-known for its bluebell woods.  Its northern boundary is the Chelmer and Blackwater Canal, an area recognised for its natural beauty with boating, fishing, walking and other leisure facilities.  For a map of how to find Little Baddow Click here.

The village, which won a "Best Kept Village" award in 2005, has a lively community and is quite unique in having a dedicated History Centre - a community project built by local fundraising events and grant awards to house the village records.  The village has an active church community and has one of the oldest non-conformist chapels built in Essex.

This website has been produced by the Parish Council with the aim of being a "first stop" for information and news about our village and surrounding area.

This retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous story opens with Dr Jekyll conducting a medical experiment on himself:  can he discover the right mixture of drugs which will reveal his true inner self and free him from the cloak of convention?  The answer is a tragic yes.  His formula unleashes the monstrous Edward Hyde and Dr Jekyll soon finds out that he can’t get the genie back in the bottle. He revisits his darker side more and more until he realises that he is not the one in control.  His family, friends and servants watch in horror as the good Dr Jekyll is destroyed by his alter ego.

Come with us on a nightmarish journey through the underworld of Victorian repressed sexuality and violence.  Like all good horror stories, Jekyll and Hyde explores the concerns of its age:  the uncontrollable power of scientific progress, the threat posed by a violent underclass and the horrors of drug addiction – concerns which are still with us today.

Director John Peregrine feels the story is really about the two sides of everyone’s personality and so the change between Jekyll and Hyde is a psychological one which will be the emphasis of this production.

The cast are finding the challenge invigorating and the play has encouraged new people to join us including Robert Bastion who will be playing Jekyll and Hyde.  Other cast members include Lindsay Lloyd who plays Jekyll’s fiancé, Celestine, Ken Rolf as Jekyll’s uncle Lanyon and Paul Randall as the lawyer Utterson.

Below stairs we have Sarah Trippett-Jones as the maid Charlotte who tries to help Jekyll but finds tragedy instead.  Barbara Newton, who usually works behind the scenes, is Hilda, another maid, while Kenton Church is Poole, the butler.  Gill Peregrine playing the part of Penny, a woman of the streets, feels she needs all her acting skills for this demanding role.

LITTLE BADDOW DRAMA’s production runs from Wednesday 23rd April to Saturday 26th April in the Memorial Hall at Little Baddow at 8.00pm

There’s a bar and plenty of free parking
